Designing for motion at rest

Micro-interactions that feel inevitable—when to animate, when to hold still, and how users notice the difference.

Glass, light, and messy reality

Notes on transmission materials, HDRI quirks, and keeping real-time scenes from looking like plastic toys.

Tokens that survive handoff

Practical habits for naming, documenting, and versioning design tokens so engineering actually adopts them.

What I learned shipping MVPs

Trading polish for momentum, picking the one journey that matters, and revisiting scope without guilt.

I’m Ryan McCaulsky, a Design Engineer with over 8 years of experience in human-computer interaction, design systems, and software design for consumer and SaaS products.

I’ve spent considerable time in high-maturity design orgs and scrappy startups. That experience has turned into an obsession for simplifying the path at early stage companies and cutting through red tape keeping larger teams agile.

A recent career pivot has given me the space to fully own my process, allowing me to bridge the gap from theoretical and static systems to live, interactive code tested by real users.

This pivot has also given me the space to experiment with modern, tactile interfaces—specifically using WebGL and GSAP to bring skeuomorphic and 3D elements to life.
